Mariposa 1038 Analysis

Mariposa 1038 Analysis

Year: 2018

Course: Arch 302a

This project composes of an analysis of “Mariposa 1038” designed by Lorcan O’Herilhy Architects. Mariposa 1038 is a 32-unit multifamily apartment located in Korea-town, a highly dense neighborhood in Los Angeles. The building represents a large cubic shape, which fills up the entire site area. The exterior facades of the building are slightly bent inward to create a sense of alleviation from the sidewalk and public spaces. The facades of the building also compose of a variety of square windows and balconies that pop out of the mass. LOHA’s intention was to create a “dynamic sense of constant rearrangement”. The project is also characterized by a central courtyard that serves as circulation and boosts interior ventilation. The courtyard‘s form expands into the skyline and creates a continuous feeling throughout the building.
